More details on Apple Home updates
Last week at Apple’s WWDC conference, Apple announced several new features for Apple Home and the HomeKit framework. These include 4K video streaming and recording for HomeKit Secure Video, summaries of what’s happening in videos, and merging home notifications on device. In talking to Apple, it sounds like this is alongside many small improvements, like faster performance adding new accessories, and multiple people in the home streaming the same HomeKit Secure Video cameras at the same time.
No word on when Apple plans to support Matter 1.5 with cameras, but Apple clearly remains committed to the Matter standard. One interesting detail for 4K cameras is that Apple will release a new HomeKit Secure Video spec for camera manufacturers to send your Apple Home a new 4K video feed. For many cameras that already record 4K, it sounds like this could be done through a simple software update. For now, this means upgrading your Apple TVs, HomePods, and iPhones to the new betas will not get you 4K video on Apple’s HomeKit Secure Video.
Stripping out Siri audio frequencies
For the demos during the WWDC keynote, it appears Apple removed some frequencies in the audio track right when people said “Siri” so it wouldn’t trigger listening devices while watching the keynote on speakers. What a clever fix, but probably not something I will have time to add in my videos.
WWDC 2026: Between Seasons
By now you’ve probably read or heard a few recaps of various aspects of WWDC, but Federico Viticci has one well worth your time to read. Weaving in his personal story, Viticci looks at the higher-level perspective, including one of the coolest pictures of John Ternus and Tim Cook I’ve ever seen.
The Schedule
Last week, I published a quick reaction video to WWDC. I also had to cancel my Thursday livestream due to my son falling and breaking his arm. He is doing as well as can be now and got a hard cast on Friday - in red to match Mario, of course.
This week I’ll be taking some time off my job to fly to Austin, TX and cover the Unify conference put on by the CSA, which maintains the Matter standard. I bet I’ll have short- or long-form videos about the trip, but I’m not sure what that will look like just yet.
I hope you have a great rest of your Sunday,
Eric
