Chamberlain Junk+ 3.0
Chamberlain announced their new Security+ 3.0 platform. This will be rolling out with new garage door openers that are completely wireless. This means there’s no opportunity to use wired workarounds like Tailwind, RATGDO, and Meross. Jennifer Pattison Tuohy has an excellent article on The Verge going into the details and recommending alternatives. The one I’ll be trying is this new-ish opener from ThirdReality that simply presses a remote button and tracks the state of your door. Chamberlain is making these updates to protect its customers with better security, but it smells a lot like something designed to drive recurring revenue. I could go on a long rant about how much I dislike Chamberlain, especially since the private equity group Blackstone bought them out in 2021, but I will spare you the words here.
Nest founder to run Apple?
Reputable Silicon Valley publication, The Information, published a report on Friday about potential successors to Tim Cook. One name prominently featured in this report is Tony Fadell. Tony Fadell had a storied career at Apple with the iPod, and early iPhones before starting Nest. Nest pioneered the idea of a sexy, smart thermostat, along with a slew of other smart home products. The company was eventually sold to Google's parent company, Alphabet, in 2014, and became part of Google in 2019. There are a number of talented people who could be a great CEO for Apple, but the smart home side of me would love to see what Fadell would do with Apple Home. I think Apple really should have bought Nest before Google did. If you work on any kind of physical or digital product, you should read Tony’s book titled “Build”.
Alan Dye going to Meta
Alan Dye is leaving his position as head of design at Apple to lead design at Meta. I’m happy for Alan Dye that he has a great new opportunity, but I’m selfishly excited for what Stephen Lemay can do at Apple as the replacement for Alan Dye. Many prominent people, including Apple designer Chan Karunamuni. Chan has been on my radar ever since I saw his talk from WWDC 2018 about the fluid interface for iPhone X. The ideas in this talk are foundational to Apple's modern design era.
The Schedule
This week, I published the spicy tier list video I promised last week. We also had a live stream on Thursday night where you can see an early glimpse of my new video setup. The main goal with this setup is to rearrange things I already have to bring you more videos.
